Shade tolerance is often a big factor for many people when considering a new Soft Leaf Buffalo lawn. Many people have come to recognise or research the shade tolerance of Buffalo when choosing their new lawn type.
Due to it's wide leaf blade, Buffalo grass has the ability to absorb more direct sunlight than other grass types which have a thin and narrow leaf blade. This is especially true with a lawn like Couch which will drop dead at the slightest sign of shade.
Buffalo lawns will require between 4-6 hours of sunlight per day, whereas a lawn such as Couch will need 6-8 hours per day.
Other shade tolerant grass varieties include the cool season Ryegrass, and the warm season Durban Grass.
Shade Tolerance Between Different Buffalo Grasses
Sapphire Buffalo has been proven to have the very best shade tolerance between the different varieties or brands of Soft Leaf Buffalo lawns.
The differences can be important though, and if shade tolerance is of minor importance then any of the better soft Buffalo varieties will be good, but if shade tolerance is far more important then Sapphire Buffalo should be the first choice between the Buffalo types.
Lawns and Shade
Despite the increased shade tolerance of Buffalo grass, it will still require a few hours of direct sunlight every day in order to survive.
If the homeowner is facing an area of the property which is in perpetual shade, then unfortunately - not even Buffalo will stand up to this test of endurance.
For areas which are subject to full shade throughout the day, it may be better to plant a garden bed, or a ground cover alternative to lawns, such as Dichondra.
